Origin Energy HQ, Sydney

As one of Australia’s leading energy companies, Origin Energy needed a workplace that reflected innovation, adaptability, and a people-first culture. Their headquarters within Tower One, Barangaroo, spans over 7,850 square metres and consolidates two former Sydney offices into a single, flexible environment. Designed to support Agile-Based Working (ABW), the four-level fit-out enables seamless movement, collaboration, and connection — supported by a central architectural feature: a beautifully refined stair, brought to life by Asentis.

At first glance, the staircase appears to be entirely crafted from timber. Clad in warm Rock Maple, its sleek lines and sculptural angles mirror the natural material palette carried throughout the interiors. But beneath the timber lies expertly engineered structural steel — the only material capable of achieving such fine dimensioning and elegant cantilevered form. Designed in close collaboration with Hassell and Buildcorp, the stair forms a light yet commanding presence in the heart of the workspace. Cleverly, it makes use of the base build atrium void, eliminating the need for disruptive demolition or additional support structures during installation.

The result is a workplace that feels considered and cohesive — blending natural textures, structural ingenuity, and spatial efficiency. Located within one of Sydney’s most prominent commercial precincts, Origin’s Barangaroo headquarters exemplifies how thoughtful design and expert execution can support new ways of working, all while honouring craftsmanship and material integrity. The project demonstrates how steel, when carefully detailed and clad, can completely transform — achieving both strength and softness in one seamless design gesture.
