Norton Rose Fulbright's workplace connects eight levels through an interconnecting staircase, featuring flexible layouts, rich earth-tone palettes, and collaboration-focused spaces to create a dynamic, future-ready environment.

Norton Rose Fulbright's workplace at 60 Martin Place in central Sydney reflects a design deeply inspired by its historic location. Spanning eight levels and 10,000 square meters, the workspace was brought to life by leading architects Carr and fit-out specialists MPA. The project features two client-facing floors with state-of-the-art meeting rooms, a boardroom, seminar spaces, a café, an outdoor terrace, and commercial kitchens. The remaining levels house workstations, breakout areas, and collaboration spaces, seamlessly connected by interconnecting stairs designed and delivered by Asentis.

These stairs, spanning six levels, embody spatial designer Nicole Coutts' vision of fostering team collaboration and knowledge sharing. Varying in layout and size, the stair designs include straight-flight, switchback, and right-angle configurations, aligning with the building's structural and fire safety requirements. Senior Associate Maurizio Toniolo explains that offsetting voids and integrating fire curtains were critical to ensuring safety while maintaining functionality. The staggered layout enhances visual connectivity between floors, complemented by large meeting areas and strategically placed tea points.

The design also celebrates Sydney's heritage with a palette inspired by the city’s historic brickwork, featuring earthy tones and curving shapes. Modular workspaces ensure adaptability to evolving business needs, supporting a flexible workforce in the post-COVID era. This sensory, dynamic workplace promotes collaboration and connection, embodying Norton Rose Fulbright's commitment to innovation and community in its Sydney home.

The main challenge for the stair was fire compartmentation. This was a driver for offsetting the voids as we could not have all voids aligned, and at certain designated levels the voids were then completely misaligned to allow for fire curtains to fall and seal the building in the invent of an emergency.”
