MLC Senior Centre, Burwood

Education
The architectural stairs in the vertical campus design for the MLC Senior Centre are like the interconnecting arteries of a collaborative learning hub.

At MLC School, education is rooted in empowerment. The Senior Centre — part of the broader MLC Masterplan — reflects this ethos through a vertical campus design that fosters confidence, curiosity, and self-reliance. A soaring central atrium, filled with natural light, forms the heart of the building. At its centre, a striking steel staircase connects all four levels, encouraging safe, visible movement and supporting the school’s commitment to independent learning.

Asentis was engaged to deliver the interconnecting steel staircases, bridges, balustrades and pod structures that bring BVN’s architectural vision to life. With a strong focus on craftsmanship and detail, we produced elements that blend industrial strength with refined finishes — including custom aluminium balustrade cover plates that resolve the concrete void edges with precision. Suspended pods extend into the atrium void, offering private, elevated study zones while maintaining a sense of openness and connection.

This award-winning project redefines the modern learning environment. Drawing inspiration from progressive workplace design, the MLC Senior Centre is a forward-thinking space where every detail, including the staircase, plays a vital role in shaping fearless thinkers and independent learners.

The aim of the new building is not to increase classrooms or student numbers, but instead to respond to the new model of teaching. The new building also houses the staff areas and the library. By combining all spaces into one building, the planning becomes more efficient and the students can access all learning resources without having to move from building to building. Staff also have a sense of ownership over their teaching area.”
