The Double Helix Staircase at UTS Central is a striking example of innovative design, inspired by the structure of DNA.

Designed by FJMT and inspired by the structure of DNA, the Double Helix Staircase at UTS Central is a unique and striking architectural feature that goes far beyond the conventional steel spiral stair. Connecting key administrative and public spaces from Level 4 to 7, the design reflects the transformative power of science and technology, symbolizing growth, development, and innovation. Much like DNA, which carries the essential genetic instructions for life, the staircase plays a crucial role in the functioning and development of the UTS community, providing a seamless connection between floors for students and staff.

The Double Helix Staircase is comprised of two separate spiral staircases, designed to move twice as many people between levels while occupying the same footprint as a single spiral stair. This allows for both practical function and sculptural beauty, making it one of the most unique staircases not only in Sydney but potentially in the country. The design merges engineering ingenuity with aesthetic appeal, offering a visual reminder of how thoughtful design can elevate a space's functionality.

Sustainability and efficiency were key considerations in the design, with the staircase being crafted from steel to ensure durability and long-term performance. This remarkable feature stands as a testament to Asentis's expertise, covering all aspects from detailed design and engineering to the final finished product. It serves as a standout example of how design can influence the functionality and experience of a space, inspiring and supporting the next generation of students at UTS.
