The transformation of Bates Smart’s Melbourne studio began with a significant challenge: revitalising two historic levels of the Orica Building while delivering a striking architectural feature that would connect them both functionally and aesthetically. This required a careful balance of heritage sensitivity, technical precision, and design innovation. Asentis played a pivotal role in addressing this challenge, contributing to the early design development in close collaboration with Bates Smart to ensure their vision was realised with craftsmanship and technical excellence.
The project commenced with a complete de-fit of levels 6 and 7, creating a blank canvas for the new design. This cleared the way for the integration of a striking steel staircase that now serves as the heart of the studio. Through precision engineering and bespoke detailing, the staircase was realised without compromise, seamlessly blending form and function. Complemented by an opulent fit-out of custom joinery and intricate metalwork, the space now delivers both technical excellence and refined aesthetic appeal.
At the core of the revitalised studio, the staircase embodies Bates Smart’s signature minimalistic elegance while demonstrating technical ingenuity. Its sculptural form delivers both visual impact and practical connectivity, perfectly balancing design ambition with execution precision. For Asentis, the project was an opportunity to solve a complex design and construction challenge, creating a centrepiece that elevates both the functionality and the identity of the transformed Orica Building.
