UTS Reading Room, Sydney

Education
A sculptural spiral staircase that elevates the triple-height atrium, blending art, light, and academic inspiration.

Inspired by traditional scholarly spaces where academics can engage with research, exchange ideas, and immerse themselves in study, the UTS Reading Room is bright, airy, and inviting, thanks to the skylight above and the expansive glass façade. The design creates an atmosphere that encourages focus, collaboration, and contemplation, blending functionality with elegance.

At the heart of the triple-height atrium sits a striking spiral staircase, delivered by Asentis. With its solid steel ribbon balustrade stringer, the staircase forms a graceful helix that complements the building’s state-of-the-art architecture while echoing the detailing of the much larger Double Helix structure elsewhere in the precinct.

Suspended over the external pavement, the staircase is topped with a large elliptical glass skylight at its base, allowing natural light to illuminate the form and highlight its sculptural quality. More than just a functional connector between levels, this staircase stands as a work of art in its own right, enhancing the Reading Room’s identity as a space for inspiration and discovery.
